Albion’s performance against Charlton Athletic was better, but the bar had been set so low in the last few weeks that it was only a return to some of the disappointing home performances we complained about in the first half of the season.
The Addicks were poor, in the same way that Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday were poor when they visited the Hawthorns, but all went away with at least a point. Three points may have been enough for a stay of execution on Eric Ramsay’s tenure as Albion’s head coach, but a draw was not.
The announcement just after 11pm on Tuesday evening brought an end to the shortest tenure of any permanent Baggies boss, just 43 days and nine games, none of which ended in victory. Unsurprisingly, no other permanent Albion boss has failed to win a match; indeed, everyone in charge of the first team for three or more games has managed to record a victory, other than Ramsay. He didn’t get an opportunity to match the worst ever winless start to an Albion management career – Bryan Robson remained winless for his first ten matches in 2004/05 before guiding the club to the Great Escape.
Escaping relegation this season probably won’t be remembered as fondly, but it will arguably be more important. Brian Little received his marching orders at the same stage in 1999/2000 with his Albion team two points and one place worse off than the current team. Gary Megson was the club’s saviour that season; it remains to be seen whether a saviour will emerge this time around.
